A 16-page draft order from the Donald Trump administration, which is being circulated among American diplomats, proposes a radical reduction and restructuring of the State Department.

This was reported by Bloomberg, which reviewed a copy of this document, Censor.NET reports.

According to the agency, the document provides for the elimination of dozens of positions and departments in the State Department, including those dealing with climate, refugee, democracy, and Africa issues.

The bill also calls for the elimination of the Bureau of International Organizations, which is responsible for Washington’s relations with the UN, and a significant reduction in the US diplomatic presence in Canada.

According to the document, four regional bureaus will operate within the State Department, covering the Indo-Pacific region, Latin America, the Middle East, and Eurasia.

Meanwhile, an unspecified number of “non-essential” embassies and consulates in sub-Saharan Africa will be closed. The changes are to be implemented by October 1, the document said.

Bloomberg writes that the equipment project also provides for the abandonment of the usual rotation of American diplomats: instead, they will be assigned to a region, where they will work for the rest of their diplomatic career. The State Department will also develop a new exam for admission to the diplomatic service, which will require “conformity with the foreign policy vision of the president” of the United States.

Other changes are also proposed, including the cancellation or reduction of scholarship programs administered by the State Department.
