The russian-Ukrainian war has spurred the rapid development of unmanned technologies.

Ukraine, already producing advanced sea drones, is likely to monitor foreign innovations – such as the American Triton AUSV by Leidos Dynetics.

According to the Espreso TV, Triton is the world’s first Autonomous Underwater and Surface Vehicle (AUSV), capable of sailing like a wind-powered vessel on the surface and submerging to perform missions as a mini-submarine.

It is fully electric and relies on solar and wind energy, enabling over three months of surface operation and up to five days underwater before needing to recharge.

With a 4.4 m length and 350 kg weight, Triton moves at up to 5 knots on the surface and 2 knots underwater. It operates autonomously using GPS, inertial navigation, and infrared cameras for 360° visibility. When a threat is detected, it can automatically dive and avoid detection.

Its modular design allows for mission-specific configurations, including advanced sensors, electronic warfare tools, or even light payloads. Triton can conduct long-range reconnaissance, covert surveillance, and monitor strategic areas such as ports or pipelines – crucial roles in modern naval warfare.

Given Ukraine’s focus on asymmetric sea operations and the growing importance of drone-based maritime defense, Triton could significantly boost its capabilities in the Black Sea.

While there’s no official confirmation of Ukrainian interest, the drone’s stealth, autonomy, and endurance make it a strong candidate for future deployment.
