“This is treason”: Slovakia reacted sharply to Fico’s trip to Putin

23.12.2024

Slovakia criticized Prime Minister Robert Fico , who traveled to Moscow on Sunday, December 22, to meet with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin. The prime minister was told that negotiations on gas transit should have been conducted with Ukraine, not Russia.

The trip to Putin was called a betrayal of national interests, reports Aktuality.sk.

Thus, the leader of the opposition party “Progressive Slovakia” Michal Šimečka called this trip a shame for Slovakia. According to him, Fico is making the country a propaganda tool for the aggressor country.

“If the Prime Minister was truly concerned about gas transit, he should have negotiated with the Ukrainian side, and not made Slovakia an instrument of Russian propaganda,” the MP said.

At the same time, Ivan Korčok, a member of the presidium of the opposition Progressive Slovakia party, called this trip a “turning point” in the country’s foreign policy. No one in the European Union supported Fico’s request to maintain gas transit through Ukraine.

“After the failure in Brussels at the EU summit, when no one in the European Union supported his request to preserve gas transit through Ukraine, the Prime Minister went to stand next to the Russian president. This is a betrayal of allies and Slovakia, this is a gap in our foreign policy, for which the Prime Minister has no mandate,” Korchok concluded.

Bronisław Greling, leader of the Freedom and Solidarity Party, also reacted to Fico’s talks with Putin. The MP called the head of the Slovak government a collaborator and stated that the country had thus found itself “in international isolation.”

“We are sending a message to Vladimir Putin and all pro-Russian politicians that Robert Fico does not speak for the entire nation,” Grayling concluded.

As OBOZ.UA reported, on December 22, Fico arrived in Moscow to talk with dictator Putin about the “gas crisis” in Slovakia due to the fact that Ukraine will stop gas transit from Russia from January 1, 2025. The prime minister also stated that they “exchanged views on the military situation in Ukraine.”

  1. “Fico claimed that Slovakia faces a “gas crisis” because of Zelenskyy ruling out the possibility of Ukraine facilitating any transit of Russian gas.”

    Dude, you’re facing a crisis???
