“There is always a chance”: Trump still sees possibility of meeting with Putin in Budapest

US President Donald Trump has commented on the possibility of meeting with Russian leader Vladimir Putin in Budapest, saying that “there is always a chance”.

Details: Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán arrived at the White House on 7 November for talks with Trump.

Trump greeted Orbán on the steps of the White House. Asked about the potential meeting with Putin in Budapest, the US president replied, “There is always a chance, very good chance”.

He ignored other questions but pointed to Orbán and called him a “great leader”.

Background:

  • During the talks, Orbán is expected to try to secure an exemption for Hungary from US sanctions against the Russian oil companies Rosneft and Lukoil and will present a “major energy proposal” to the United States.
  • The Hungarian prime minister is also reportedly planning to persuade Trump to meet with Putin.
