Friedrich Merz , who could soon become German Chancellor, commented on the Russian missile strike on the city of Sumy, which killed 34 people and injured nearly 100. He stressed that the Russians had insidiously and deliberately launched a second ballistic missile after people had gone to help those injured in the first strike.
The leader of the Christian Democratic Union said this in an interview
with ARD. The politician said that the shelling of Sumy by Russian troops on April 13 was a deliberate war crime.
According to Merz, this is “treason and a serious war crime, targeted and deliberate.”
“There were two waves of attack. The second one came when humanitarian workers were trying to provide aid to the victims. This is treachery that cannot be surpassed. And this is a conscious and deliberate grave war crime. And I say to all those in Germany who naively call on Putin to sit down at the negotiating table: this is the answer. This is what Putin does to those who talk to him about a ceasefire,” Merz said.
He added that he was in Bucha in the Kyiv region three years ago and saw how the Russian army operated there. The occupiers were firing at buildings on the third, fourth, and fifth floors.
“Why the upper floors? Because bullets get inside the houses, the house becomes uninhabitable and collapses. This is exactly how Putin and his army commit the most serious war crimes,” said the head of the CDU.
In the same interview, Merz reiterated that after consultations with France and Great Britain, he would transfer to Ukraine the Taurus KEPD-350 cruise missiles, which it had long requested.
As OBOZ.UA reported, Friedrich Merz said that he would be ready to transfer German Taurus long-range missiles to the Ukrainian Defense Forces, but only on condition that the corresponding decision is supported by EU leaders. The politician noted that he had held this position before.
