The BMD-2 has been criticized for its weak armor and very limited interior space.

The High-Precision Complexes holding company has delivered a batch of modernized BMD-2M airborne combat vehicles equipped with the Bereg module to the Russian army. It announced this on its Telegram channel.

The exact number of vehicles in the batch is traditionally not disclosed. The equipment was transferred within the framework of a state defense order. As noted, before being sent to the troops, all vehicles passed the necessary tests and are fully ready for use.

According to the Russians, the new combat module provides increased firepower and increased range of target engagement, which expands the capabilities of airborne troops units.

The Bereg combat module has an improved sighting system, an improved fire control system, and the Kornet anti-tank missile system.

Thanks to this, the updated vehicles are capable of hitting a wide range of targets, including tanks and other armored vehicles, as well as fortifications and fortifications. The BMD-2M airborne combat vehicles have been equipped with additional protection kits and electronic warfare equipment.

The Russians boast that as a result of the modernization, “the vehicle has become more technological and more comfortable for the crew,” which puts it on a par with the BMP-2M equipped with the Berezhok combat module.

At the same time, the platform’s fundamental problems were not eliminated. These include weak armor and very limited internal space.

The vehicle has light armor that protects only from small arms bullets and shrapnel. It is even penetrated by machine guns, and the narrow hatches make it very difficult to quickly leave the vehicle. The BMD-2 has extremely weak mine protection.

Because of all this, the vehicle even received the derogatory nickname “the mass grave of the landing force.” As of May 2026, the Russian army had lost at least 400 BMD-2 landing force combat vehicles in the war against Ukraine.
