The promised aid to Kyiv is insufficient, and the security agreements provide no real guarantees, – NYT

Ukraine is given enough weapons to stabilize the front, but not to expel the Russians.

In recent days, Ukraine has received additional commitments from Western partners to increase military and financial assistance . But the promised is still not enough for the final victory over Russia, writes The New York Times .

The publication notes that the recent commitments of the partner countries were taken too late to help Ukraine avoid losing positions on the front in recent months and the destruction of Ukrainian power plants by Russian missiles.

Serhii Kuzan, head of the independent research group of the Ukrainian Center for Security and Cooperation, noted that in Ukraine, the latest promises of partners are perceived “with cautious optimism.”

“We are sincerely grateful for any help, and if we receive all the necessary weapons and ammunition in time, it will give us a chance to stabilize the front line. But this is not enough to talk about the liberation of the occupied territories and victory as such,” he said.

As the NYT writes, Ukrainian officials enthusiastically accepted the security agreement with the United States, signed the day before. However, it does not contain specific guarantees from the US, only a commitment for the White House to work with Congress to allocate military aid to Ukraine, which could be a problem, given the delays in the allocation of the last package of such aid.

Moreover, the new agreement can be terminated by either side, meaning that former President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly expressed his opposition to continued support for Ukraine, could abandon the agreement if he defeats Biden in the November election.

Average Ukrainians do not see any concrete benefit from the security agreement with the US and other countries.

“It is not clear what exactly the security agreements will give us when they come into force, or is it just communication. In general, what do they mean? What do they provide? No one understands,” a resident of Kyiv told the newspaper.

  1. I’m glad that the NYT has written this article. Maybe it will make a few more people think about the piss poor performance that came from the combined West.
