In the summer of 2022, the Russians placed several dozen captured defenders of Mariupol in prison in Olenivka, and on July 29 it became known that  an explosion occurred in the Olenivka colony , in which about fifty Ukrainian prisoners died. The occupiers blamed the entire Ukraine and a missile strike from the American HIMARS MLRS. 

However, Ukrainian prisoners who were held in Olenivka and were later released in exchange  spoke  about land mines planted by the Russians inside the barracks.

On the anniversary of the tragedy, the UN made an official statement that it was 100% certain that it could not have been a missile strike from the Himars.
