According to him, they started acting too late and did too little.

Ukraine’s allies never aimed for Kyiv’s victory in the war against Russia . This was stated in an interview with BILD  by Friedrich Merz, the leader of the conservative CDU/CSU bloc, the largest opposition force in the Bundestag, who was recently nominated as a chancellor candidate in the autumn 2025 elections.

“I was of the opinion, and the chancellor said it in a government statement three days after the start of the war, that in fact we are now helping Ukraine – he did not say this – not to win this war, but not to lose it. Ukraine will never be able to defeat Russia, it is was never the goal. But for me, victory means: it must restore its territory. And we must do everything to make the continuation of the war by military force hopeless. And we are far from it “, he said.

According to him, as of today, after two and a half years of war, the situation is dire. Mertz emphasized that they started too late and did too little.

Friedrich Mertz’s statements regarding the war in Ukraine

In June, he  called for “peaceful negotiations” with the Russian Federation  and refused to repeat his previous demands to the federal government to supply Kyiv with Taurus missiles.

Already in July, Mertz supported  the supply of combat aircraft to Ukraine . According to him, Ukrainians should be helped to restore sovereignty over their airspace.

On September 17, it became known that Mertz became the candidate of conservatives in the chancellor elections.

  1. Merz is completely right. It’s been not only Germany’s “strategy”, of being too late with too little, but that of the combined West. To this very moment, there is no plan as to what the ultimate goal should be and when it should be reached. Scared little girls in a foreboding forest have a better plan than Scholz, Biden, et al.
