Former US National Security Agency employee Edward Snowden, who lives in Russia, commented on reports that Telegram founder Pavel Durov was detained in Paris. He wrote about this on the X social network on the afternoon of August 25.
“The detention of Durov is an attack on basic human rights, on freedom of speech and association. I am shocked and deeply saddened that [French President Emmanuel] Macron would stoop to the level of hostage-taking as a means of gaining access to private communications. This is humiliating not only for France, but for the entire world,” Snowden said.
In 2013, Edward Snowden leaked information about NSA and CIA surveillance programs on American citizens to journalists. He then fled the country, first to Hong Kong and then to Russia. He spent more than a month in the transit zone of Sheremetyevo Airport. Snowden was then granted temporary asylum in the Russian Federation. In September 2022, he received Russian citizenship.
