Finnish President Alexander Stubb said that his country is not at war with Russia, and it is important not to react too violently to Moscow’s air provocations.
He said this in an interview with CNN, Censor.NET reports .
Stubb stressed that a “carrot and stick” approach is needed in relations with Russia. According to him, US President Donald Trump is currently demonstrating a tougher line, in particular, he called the statement about the possibility of shooting down Russian planes in the airspace of NATO countries a “powerful deterrent.”
At the same time, the Finnish president noted that Russia is waging a conventional war against Ukraine and a hybrid war against the West.
“In such situations, we need to do two things: first, we remain calm. Second, we create defense mechanisms so that this does not happen again. The main thing here is not to react too violently,” he said.
When asked about a possible violation of Finnish airspace, Stubb replied that decisions would be made according to existing protocols: first an inspection, then a warning, and only after that – a decision by the Air Force.
He also emphasized the importance of the partnership with the United States, noting: “I am the President of Finland , so it is very important for me to get along with the President of the United States. I don’t see red or blue, I see stars and stripes.”
