In any territory Russia occupies there is neither freedom of speech nor freedom of religion. Despite what Tucker Carlson and the Russians say, Ukraine is one of the most vibrantly religious countries in Europe. Before the full-scale Russian invasion, more people attended Orthodox church in Ukraine than in Russia, even though Russia had more than 3x the population.
Now, Russians are sending missiles upon churches and killing priests and pastors—with a special zest to kill Evangelicals. Meanwhile, Moscow, in a tradition going back to Stalin, has agents in Ukraine through its state-controlled church entity. And in the same communist Stalinist tradition, Russia brazenly blames others for the evil it does.

Americans do not realize that the Russian Orthodox Church “the church of Russia” considers most American Christian/Evangelical sects to be heretics. Also, the leader of the Russian Orthodox Church in Russia is a General in the FSB, the Russian security service (think KGB). I don’t know what Tucker Carlson was smoking when he referred to the Russian state as Christian and somehow allied with Americans in that sense. They most certainly are not.

In the ancient and still flourishing Ukrainian language, the word for “if” literally means “how-what”: a workman like idea of how to achieve the impossible. Because Ukraine never colonized other countries, the Ukrainian language is an easy window into how early Indo-European humans forumated language based on necessity and possibility.

The US is more Christian than Russia. Russia persecutes anyone that is not Russian Orthodox. The ROC is nothing but a tool of the regime. Ukraine does not persecute anyone based on their church or religion. They have shut down a number of Moscow Patriarchate Churches when they were caught out as Russian agents, but others have been left alone.
I am puzzled by the headline and really most of the article and by the “analysis” by the progressive journalist from Chicago.
Ever since February 2022 Americans and our politicians are well aware that Ukrainian Christians are being killed by Russians as a result or an objective of their invasion. In my opinion the atrocities against Ukrainian civilians and churches is one of the main drivers for US sympathy and support for Ukraine.
It is well known in the US that the Russian Orthodox Church of Moscow has been under the control and direction of the Soviet and now Russian authorities and intelligence agencies. This has been well known since at least the 1930’s and particularly during the Cold War. After the fall of USSR many protestant churches sent missionaries to Russia, the direct hostility toward the western church workers by the Russian Orthodox Church was widely reported.
The headline is a statement of fact. The alternative is that he did know, but refused to acknowledge it, which is even worse.
The result of his action, or rather inaction, is the death of many thousands of Ukrainian soldiers and civilians.
Joe Landsley is not a “progressive.” He’s a conservative who used to work for Fox. He is one of the most knowledgeable of the Kyiv-based journalists.
