The German Defense Ministry said it was investigating the participation of German soldiers in the competition along with Russian and Belarusian troops.
German soldiers took part in joint sports competitions with Russians in Bangladesh and posed for photos together, BILD writes .
As the publication reminds, Russian athletes are not allowed to participate in most international competitions, including the Olympic Games. However, the International Military Sports Association CISM (Conseil International du Sport Militaire) regularly organizes events in which Russian soldiers can participate – even in military uniform.
Thus, at the end of February 2024, CISM-organized archery competitions were held in Bangladesh. At the awards ceremony, eight Russian soldiers posed next to seven servicemen of the German armed forces, including the head of the German delegation, Lieutenant Colonel Christian Lutzkendorf.
A spokesman for the Ministry of Defence told BILD that the ministry reacted immediately after learning about the photos. Bundeswehr soldiers participating in the CISM competition were reportedly advised that such photos were unacceptable.
“However, according to the BILD investigation, Bundeswehr soldiers took pictures with Russian servicemen at two other CISM events even after the “inappropriate” photos taken in February. Among them were the 79th CISM General Assembly in Tanzania in May and the CISM Basketball Championship in Serbia in June,” the publication notes.
Although none of the events involved any sporting competitions between German and Russian soldiers, there were joint “technical meetings” and “official dinners” with the participation of German and Russian officers.
The German Defense Ministry, responding to a BILD inquiry, reported that since the summer it had begun checking the participation of German soldiers in the competitions together with Russian and Belarusian military. If this is confirmed, the participation of German soldiers will be “fundamentally cancelled.”
