“Sky Shield”: Europe may deploy a program involving 120 fighter jets to protect Ukraine from Russian attacks

03/6/2025

Europe could create a massive “Sky Shield” air program involving 120 fighter jets to defend Ukraine from Russian attacks. The project, developed by military experts, aims to protect Kyiv, Lviv, Odessa and three nuclear power plants without interfering in combat operations on the front lines.

This is reported by The Guardian. “Sky Shield” is considered a separate project from NATO, which will be led by Europe.

It is expected to stop Russian cruise missiles and drones striking Ukrainian cities and critical infrastructure. The initiative could be based on the idea of a “truce in the sky” proposed by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

It would cover three operating nuclear power plants, as well as the cities of Odesa and Lviv, but not the front line or the east of the country, and, according to a recently published document, it could “exercise greater military, political and socio-economic impact than 10,000 European ground troops.”

Supporters of the initiative include Philip Breedlove, former US Air Force general and NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander Europe, and Sir Richard Shirreff, former British Army general and NATO’s Deputy Supreme Allied Commander at the beginning of the last decade, as well as former Polish President Aleksander Kwasniewski.

Former Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis, who is also a supporter of the project, noted that it could be a key step in ensuring Ukraine’s security and strengthening European defense capabilities.

Previously, such initiatives were not supported due to fears of escalating the conflict. However, after the meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Donald Trump, which did not bring a breakthrough on the issue of American aid, Europe realized that support for Ukraine largely falls on the shoulders of European countries.

The US cut off military aid and limited intelligence sharing with Kyiv, leading to a rapid realization in Europe that the continent would have to take a leading role in supporting Ukraine while the war continued and provide the country with security guarantees as part of any peace deal.

Supporters of the agreement believe that the pace of developments last week means that ideas about protecting part of Ukraine’s airspace may now take on a new meaning, although the plan is also intended to emphasize how important and effective airspace protection will be in providing security guarantees to Kyiv in the event of a ceasefire.

There are fears in Western political circles that this could lead to a direct conflict between fighter jets from NATO member countries and Russia and a dangerous escalation of hostilities if an aircraft from either side is attacked or shot down.

However, supporters of the project claim that “the risk to the Sky Shield pilots is small,” since since the beginning of 2022, Moscow has not dared to launch its combat aircraft beyond the existing front lines. According to the initiators, the actual distance from the Russian aircraft will be “over 200 km.”

We will remind, on the night of March 6, the aggressor country Russia struck Ukraine with ballistic missiles and launched more than a hundred drones. The defense forces neutralized 68 UAVs, and the imitation drones were lost without consequences. Due to the enemy attack, which lasted from 19:00 last day, there are damages, victims and injured in the Dnipropetrovsk region, as well as in the Kharkiv, Sumy and Odessa regions.

  1. Will Europe do this? It would be high time. Protecting the skies over Ukraine would be a first good step to help the country in a concrete way.
Sooner or later, if no Black Swan event happens for the cockroaches, the Europeans will have to get engaged in combat … either in Ukraine or on their own soil.

  2. It’s time to tell the US to get the fuck out of it, they are the problem, not the solution. Mafia land will whine and threaten to nuke all and sundry, but they will do nothing.

    • I agree. The US under the gangster administration is not to be trusted. Might as well accept the truth and move on with a united and determined Europe for once.
