In the Moscow region of the Russian Federation, on the night of November 23,
drones attacked the Shaturskaya GRES, the largest power plant in the region. The facility, which is important for the electricity and heat supply of the Moscow region, was attacked by drones, after which a fire broke out.
According to preliminary data, the power distribution node of the station is on fire. The attack was reported by local media, as well as the independent Russian publication ASTRA.
What is known
Local residents immediately began reporting the attack on the GRES in the settlement of Shatura in the Moscow region. They filmed videos of the arrivals and the fire that broke out behind them. Some of the “correspondents” claimed that there was more than one arrival and that “the fourth or fifth” drone was already flying at the GRES.

“A large fire broke out at the Shatura GRES in the Moscow region. The largest power plant in the Moscow region caught fire after a series of explosions from 03:00 to 06:00. Eyewitnesses report 4-5 loud explosions, bright flashes and dense smoke over Shatura.
The causes of the incident are being established. Information about the victims is being clarified,” wrote one of the local publics.
As of 7 a.m. Kyiv time, ASTRA noted, the authorities of the Moscow region were also silent about the consequences of the attack: the reaction came closer to 9 a.m.
“This morning, a drone attack was carried out on the Shaturskaya GRES. Some of the drones were destroyed by air defense forces, several fell on the territory of the station. A fire broke out at the facility, it has now been localized, emergency services continue their work. The power supply in the city has not been disrupted – switching to back up lines was carried out promptly. To support the heat supply until the situation is fully stabilized, we have sent mobile block-modular boiler houses to the district. The head of the district and all services are working on site. The situation is under control, there is no threat to residents,” said Moscow Region Governor Andrey Vorobyov.

Meanwhile, the Russian Defense Ministry routinely reported on the “repelling of an attack” and the “shooting down” of two aircraft-type drones over the Moscow region. The fire was still ongoing at the time.
ASTRA also conducted an OSINT analysis of footage from the scene that appeared online and concluded that the flight occurred at the power distribution node of the GRES.
“According to ASTRA’s analysis of one of the videos, the footage was shot from Zharova Street. The distance from the shooting point to the GRES is approximately 1.6 kilometers. ASTRA’s analysis confirms that the Shaturskaya GRES caught fire as a result of the attack. The GRES power output node is probably on fire. The power output node is an infrastructure complex through which the power plant transmits the generated electricity to a single power system,” the publication noted.

The strike on Shaturskaya GRES was also confirmed in the Exilenova+ Telegram channel.
But the Moscow Region Emergencies Ministry announced a fire in transformers.
“At the time of the arrival of the first fire and rescue unit, three transformers were burning [on an area] of 65 sq. m. each. Further information is being clarified,” the Russian edition of Kommersant quoted the Ministry of Emergencies as saying.
It is claimed that 137 specialists and 49 pieces of equipment are working on site.
What is known about the attacked Shaturskaya GRES
Shaturskaya GRES named after V. I. Lenin is one of the oldest power plants in the Russian Federation. It was founded in 1920 during the implementation of the GOELRO plan. The plant participates in providing electricity and heat for the Moscow region and, as local publications note, is the largest in the region.
Its installed capacity is 1500 MW. Initially, it operated on peat, now the main type of fuel is natural gas. It is part of the generating company OJSC “OGK-4”.
Earlier, OBOZ.UA reported that on the evening of November 22, the territory of the occupied Donetsk region again lost electricity. Residents of Shakhtarsk and Dokuchayevsk were left without electricity, and there is no electricity in Zugrez and Khartsyzsk. The loss of electricity was allegedly preceded by drone attacks on energy facilities in the mentioned cities.
