Sewage disaster in Russian city of Engels leaves thousands without running water

A major sewage accident has left nearly 200,000 residents of Engels, a Russian city known as a launchpoint for bombers attacking Ukraine, without access to running water. The incident, reported by the Telegram channel Baza on Sunday, May 10, has plunged the city into what locals are calling a “fecal apocalypse.”

The crisis began on April 29 when the main gravity-flow sewage collector on Mendeleev Street failed. Emergency repairs started, but then the city was hit by abnormal rainfall, making the situation significantly worse. Sewage flooded courtyards and even the ground floors of some residential buildings.

Authorities have cut off the regular water supply and declared a municipal state of emergency. Russia’s consumer safety watchdog, Rospotrebnadzor, has advised locals to drink only boiled water or buy bottled water instead.

Utility workers have asked residents not to use toilets or sinks, warning that without water pressure, waste will accumulate in the pipes. Once the repairs are completed, the city could be overwhelmed by a wave of local clogs if people continue to use their plumbing. Local authorities have set up deliveries of drinking and technical water to dozens of locations and assure that crews are working around the clock to clean the collector and pump water out of flooded courtyards. However, officials have not given a timeline for when the situation will be resolved.
