According to Moldovan President Maia Sandu, a peaceful resolution of the conflict in unrecognized Transnistria is possible because Ukraine keeps the Russian army away from Moldova’s borders.

She stated this at a joint press conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv, European Pravda reports.

Sandu confirmed information that Moldova is discussing the reintegration of Transnistria with partners from the European Union.

“We have discussed this issue, in particular with our EU partners, and we all agree that we need a process through which the region will be demilitarized, de-oligarchized and democratized, and to implement this stage we will need international support – this is what we are currently discussing, primarily with the EU. So, this is part of the discussion on reintegration plans,” Sandu noted.

According to Moldovan President Maia Sandu, a peaceful resolution of the conflict in unrecognized Transnistria is possible because Ukraine keeps the Russian army away from Moldova’s borders.

She also commented on the issue of Ukraine’s contribution to this process.

“The biggest contribution that Ukraine is already making is that it keeps the Russian army away from the borders, thereby allowing us to seek a peaceful solution to the conflict, and we appreciate that very much,” she stressed.

President Volodymyr Zelensky also commented on this issue.

“As for the international mechanism, this issue is, of course, primarily related to Moldova. And it is clear why. And it simply cannot be otherwise, honestly and fairly. For us, the issue of Transnistria is always an issue of security on our borders,” the head of state noted.

  • Previously, Major General in the Reserve Volodymyr Gavrylov stated that in the event of provocations from Transnistria, the Armed Forces of Ukraine would be able to quickly neutralize the threat, because there are almost no combat-ready Russian forces and resources in this territory for serious resistance.

  1. Sandu is making two huge mistakes. Getting the EU involved is the first mistake. Not giving the green light for a military operation is another.
I can’t understand why she doesn’t see that her approach leads to nowhere.

    • I don’t think things are that grim. The EU can help with money and setting up democratic institutions which will help organize and sustain elections and new management of the occupied territory.
Second, Ukraine can easily neutralize any aggression by the Moskali there.
