Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov complained about the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and its head Thomas Bach, accusing them of undermining sports by permitting transgender athletes while not allowing Russian and Belarusian athletes to compete, the Russian propagandist media RIA Novosti said on March 4.
“What is happening now with the sports movement, what the IOC leaders and Thomas Bach personally are doing, I consider a betrayal of all the ideals of Olympism,” Lavrov said.
“[Bach] said in one of his speeches, reacting to the initiatives to allow transgender people to compete in all kinds of competitions: ‘We cannot politicize sports, so we need to create the necessary equal rights for them,’” Lavrov complained.
“That’s when he was told: ‘Okay, you are against politicization. Will you allow Russian and Belarusian athletes?’ He says: ‘No, that’s different. This is not politicization, they violated the UN Charter.’”
Russia has not been reinstated in the IOC.
Russian and Belarusian athletes reportedly will not participate in the 2024 Winter Youth Olympics, scheduled to be held from Jan. 19 to Feb. 1 in South Korea.
