Russia is advancing at an unprecedented pace, “warming up” Ukraine’s interest in negotiations, – NYT

The steady advance of the occupiers has increased pressure on the Ukrainian authorities to begin negotiations on a ceasefire, the publication emphasized.

Russian troops are approaching two strongholds in the Donetsk region – the city of Kurakhovo and the village of Velyka Novosilka. According to analysts, their fall could pave the way for the Russians to seize the southern part of the region. Against this background, the Ukrainian authorities, worried about losses, are increasingly “warming up” interest in the possibility of starting peace talks with Moscow, writes The New York Times .

It is noted that since the summer of this year, occupation forces have been advancing in the Donetsk region at a pace not seen since 2022.

The city of Kurakhovo is currently at particular risk of being caught in a pincer movement: the Russians are advancing towards it from the north and south and have entered its eastern outskirts. At the same time, the Russians are advancing on the village of Velyka Novosilka. As noted by the Center for Defense Strategies, this settlement is a critically important logistics hub for Ukrainian forces, one of the starting points for Ukraine’s southern counteroffensive in the summer of 2023.

“The Russian offensive in the southern Donetsk region has strengthened Moscow’s logistical lines into the vast land corridor it has seized in southern Ukraine. By pushing Ukrainian forces out of artillery range of key railways, Russian troops are now free to operate rail hubs to move troops and equipment from east to south, experts say,” the NYT writes.

It is indicated that this slow but steady advance of the occupiers has increased pressure on the Ukrainian authorities to begin negotiations on a ceasefire, the publication emphasized.

At the same time, according to some experts, the situation, although difficult, is not catastrophic for Ukraine, since Russia has not yet reached a single major city in this area.

The publication called the retention of Russian territory in the Kursk region, which Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky views as a “potential bargaining chip in negotiations with Moscow,” a “positive moment” for Kyiv.

“While Russia has managed to retake at least a third of the territory in the Kursk region in the past few months, recent counterattacks aimed at displacing Ukrainian troops have made little progress,” the NYT noted.

  1. What a surprise, the 2nd most powerful army in the world is advancing again, obviously afraid of Trump. I thought Ukraine would defeat ruSSia with ease (sarcasm 😫).

If Biden would have armed Ukraine to shit in 2022 the situation would be quite different. But luxury ice cream is expensive…

  2. The NYT once againcoming up with BS. The headline states unprecendented pace, but the article states slow and steady. They kind of contradict each other. What NYT fails to state is the cost of human life for these “unprecedented” advances.

    • As I mentioned below, that’s the Unian headline, not the NY Times headline.

Both articles say that “Russian troops have advanced in the Donetsk region at a pace unseen since 2022” – which also belies “unprecedented”.

  3. Here’s an unlocked link to the NYTimes article. The word “unprecedented” doesn’t appear in it. I don’t know if the article changed, or if that word came from the Unian writer or editor. I do note that in the headline above, “unprecedented” is not in quotes, while “warming up” (which *does* appear in the NYT article) is.

  4. Where are the Europeans, who were huffing and puffing over the nork involvement? Shouldn’t they increase military aid to help stop these advances? Where are they?
Hot gasses won’t stop the mafia army. Weapons will!
