Since the start of this year, Ukraine’s become very good at shooting down Shahed drones. But something changed.

Russia realised how effective Ukraine was getting at intercepting them, so they started using a new tactic: putting jet engines in the drones.

They’re much faster, much harder to shoot down, and they’re now flying over Ukrainian cities all the time. As I’m writing this in Kyiv, having just got back from Odesa, I can still hear one somewhere in the distance.

So I went down to Odesa to spend time with a couple of air defence units and understand just how serious this new problem is. I wanted to see how they used to shoot these drones down, why the new jet powered versions are so difficult to catch, and what they’re planning to do about them next.
