According to Rosstat data obtained by hackers, as of the end of August, Russia had lost at least 412,576 soldiers in the war with Ukraine. This figure does not include those missing in action or foreign mercenaries.
The leaked data was published on the RosstatLeaks portal.
The website of Russia’s Federal State Statistics Service (Rosstat) was hacked on the night of Saturday, November 1. The hacker groups Cyberpartisans and Silent Crow claimed responsibility for the attack.
As a result of the attack, the hackers gained access to a significant portion of the agency’s IT infrastructure, including its central office and regional branches. According to the hackers, they gained control of approximately 25,000 computers.

In particular, the hackers breached Rosstat’s electronic document management system and databases, which contain statistical, economic, and personal information, as well as census data. It is reported that during their time within Rosstat’s infrastructure, the attackers obtained approximately 23 terabytes of information, including details about Russian military casualties in the war against Ukraine.
According to the project authors’ calculations, 440,982 death records were extracted from Rosstat’s medical records database, which they link to the mortality of military personnel in the war with Ukraine. The reported period begins in February 2022, and the database snapshot is as of August 28, 2026. This figure does not include those missing in action or foreign mercenaries.
The largest category consists of 356,056 deaths classified under ICD-10 code Y36, ‘Hostilities.’ Another 38,229 records were selected under code Y89.1, ‘Consequences of Hostilities,’ or based on textual descriptions indicating that the death occurred in combat. Separately, the authors accounted for 18,291 records marked ‘Killed in Military Operations’ without a cause-of-death code and 575 marked ‘Terrorist Act.’
The broader tally also included 13,671 deaths registered in Russia where the place of death was listed as occupied territory or Ukraine, but the cause of death was not specified. Another 14,160 cases were non-combat deaths of military personnel, including those due to illness, traffic accidents, and suicides. The total for these six categories is 440,982.
The authors also added an estimate of 9,118 death records for men with no specified cause of death in areas along the front line, which they distributed proportionally based on confirmed data from other locations. After adding this estimate, the total number stands at 450,100 people.
At the same time, analysts emphasize a significant delay between death and the appearance of a record in the database. According to the authors’ calculations, after one month, the database contains only 26% of death records from the relevant period, after six months, 69%, and after one year, 99%.

Therefore, the figures for recent months are systematically underreported. For example, as of the end of August, the database contained records for only 39,296 deaths in 2026, compared to 182,264 deaths in 2025.
At the same time, over the six months leading up to the data cut-off, the database was updated by an average of 18,280 entries per month, and the rate was 1.26 times—or 26%—higher than a year earlier. According to the authors’ forecast, by the end of 2026, the cumulative total in the database, calculated using their methodology, could rise to between 508,799 and 542,708 deaths.
Missing in action
The Ukrainian project I Want to Live received more than 223,000 requests from Russian families regarding the search for servicemen missing in action during the period from January 9, 2024, to October 1, 2026, alone.
According to the project’s authors, citing their own sources within the Russian army, as of early 2026, the number of Russian soldiers missing in action exceeded 178,000.

As a reminder, on November 1, the Ukraine’s Defense Forces neutralized 2,500 Russian servicemen, marking the highest daily casualty figure for the enemy since the start of the full-scale invasion. October 2026 set a record for the total number of Russian military casualties—over the course of the month, Russia lost 54,400 soldiers killed or wounded.

A half a million dead and over a million cripples…
For what? To satisfy an old dwarf’s sick, evil pipedreams.
Missing in action are just dead too. So, 600.000 killed for sure. 1 million wounded, as in crippled. Meaning the Ukrainian figures are very correct!
