After winning the US Congressional elections, Democrats intend to step up support for Ukraine. Their plans include preparing a new security assistance package worth an estimated $15 billion, tightening sanctions against Russia, and supporting the Ukrainian energy sector.

This was reported by the Financial Times, citing aides to American lawmakers and representatives of organizations that support Ukraine.

What assistance do the Democrats plan to provide to Ukraine?

After winning the midterm elections, the Democratic Party will gain control of both houses of the US Congress starting in January. This will allow its representatives to more actively use budgetary and oversight powers, including to expand aid to Ukraine and increase economic pressure on Russia.

According to an aide to a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Democrats are currently working on a proposal for a new security support package for Kyiv. Its preliminary amount is estimated at approximately $15 billion.

At the same time, lawmakers want to secure additional aid for Ukraine before the new Congress takes office. They plan to pay particular attention to supporting Ukraine’s energy sector, which is under regular Russian attacks.

To this end, Democrats are considering the possibility of introducing relevant provisions into the annual US National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). As explained by Razom for Ukraine Senior Advisor Melinda Garing, possible amendments include measures on sanctions, intelligence support for Ukraine, the supply of interceptor missiles, and the operation of the Starlink and Starfield satellite systems.

Democrats want to review sanctions against Russia and check Starlink’s work

Another area of work will be a review of US sanctions legislation against Russia. In addition, Democrats intend to strengthen oversight of Elon Musk’s Starlink satellite network, which is used by the Ukrainian military.

Starlink has drawn such attention, in particular, after the network’s slowdown last month, which affected Ukraine’s ability to counter Russian attacks.

At the same time, the implementation of the Democrats’ legislative initiatives will depend on the position of the Republicans. In particular, if US President Donald Trump vetoes the relevant decisions, the support of at least two-thirds of the members of each chamber of Congress will be required to overcome it.

What is known about the US Congress’s plans to assist Ukraine?

American lawmakers could vote on multibillion-dollar military aid to Ukraine by the end of the year. According to Andriy Dobryansky, an expert at the Center for US-Ukraine Relations, the initiative has already passed the procedural stage in the House of Representatives thanks to a petition to force the bill to be brought before the House. Republican senators Tom Tillis and Mitch McConnell, in particular, are in favor of this.

The new US Congress may also initiate an investigation into the delays in military aid to Ukraine by the Donald Trump administration. Volodymyr Dubovik, director of the Center for International Studies at Odessa National Mechnikov University, said that lawmakers may demand explanations for the delay in the transfer of funds previously approved by Congress.

  1. Just days after the shellacking and things are already looking brighter for Ukraine and worse for the mafia-terrorist state.
