Ron Johnson: Russia-Ukraine war will end ‘in a negotiated settlement’

BY LAUREN IRWIN – 12/03/23

Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) said he thinks the war between Russia and Ukraine will end “in a negotiated settlement” in recent comments.

In an interview with radio talk show host John Catsimatidis on “The Cats Roundtable,” Johnson said the war between Russia and Ukraine is “not a fair fight,” citing Russia’s nuclear weapons.

“The only way this war ends is in a negotiated settlement. Every day that goes by while this war continues, more Ukrainians die, citizens and soldiers, more Russian conscripts die. I take no joy in that. More of Ukraine gets destroyed,” Johnson said. “So, the sooner that they reach a negotiated settlement, the better from my standpoint.”

Johnson said he thinks Russia will not lose the war against its neighbor to the southeast. The Wisconsin senator said he doesn’t “like that reality, but it’s true.”

Johnson, who previously served on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and as chairman of the Subcommittee on Europe and Regional Security Cooperation, said he has visited Ukraine a lot.

He said he has nothing but sympathy for the people of Ukraine and “nothing but contempt” for Russian President Vladimir Putin, but he said he thinks “Putin is not going to lose this war.”

“This war has to end,” Johnson said in the interview. “We’re not gonna like the result, but every day that goes by, we’re gonna like the result less.”

Johnson said he is not sure what the Biden administration plans to do about the situation in Ukraine, but he, like other GOP lawmakers, intends to make sure the U.S. Southern border gets attention in funding, too.

He said he is leveraging Biden’s request for international aid to Ukraine and Israel in their respective wars by saying, “You don’t get a dollar for Ukraine until you actually pass immigration reform.”

“So, I’m trying to make sure that the Republicans in the Senate will deny cloture on any bill to provide funding for Ukraine that doesn’t have benchmarks that the administration has to meet before the funding flows,” Johnson told Catsimatidis.

Now let’s examine what Sen Ron Johnson said last year :

Sen. Johnson Statement on Russian Invasion of Ukraine

February 24, 2022

OSHKOSH – U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, released the following statement regarding Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine:

“Weakness tempts tyrants and totalitarians to seek more power. People who only want to live in peace suffer the consequences. Ultimately, there is only one group of people responsible for the tragedies unfolding – Vladimir Putin and his cronies. They have stolen wealth from the Russian people, destabilized and done great harm to their European neighbors, and now they’ve crossed another line that will yield untold horrors. Europe must act with strength and resolve to prevent risking a wider conflict, and the U.S. must support our NATO allies and freedom loving people in this moment of extreme peril.”

  1. So what happened?
He starts in a principled place, shows integrity and flips to where he is now; regretting the death of “Russian conscripts.”
It’s like those arseholes who call for “restraint on both sides.”
He calls for a “negotiated settlement.” Prick. That puts him squarely in the genocide-enabling Kissinger/Trump/Jeffrey Sachs camp, aka “land for peace.”
But further research shows that he is a devoted Trumpoid, so his switch from integrity to moral bankruptcy is explainable.

    • Only if “negotiated” means land for peace. Until then this is just your own interpretation of the negotiations. Correct? By the time Ukraine is finished with the filth they may be begging to keep a base in the Azov Sea or even transmit gas through Ukraine. Don’t assume it is a land grab even though it could very well be. Same with Trump. You read WAY to much into words, friend. Try taking words from politicians with a grain of salt but pay very close attention to what they do. Trust but verify. That is the fair way to cover this imo.

  2. “Europe must act with strength and resolve to prevent risking a wider conflict, and the U.S. must support our NATO allies and freedom loving people in this moment of extreme peril.”

Where are the leaders to accomplish this? I see none whatsoever.

    • That is what he said when putler unleashed his Holocaust.
Now he just wants to give land away and have done with it.
There is one American politician who who could fix this : Roger Wicker. I am not aware of any other.

  3. Johnson said the war between Russia and Ukraine is “not a fair fight,” citing Russia’s nuclear weapons.

BS. It’s not a fair fight because the cowardly West won’t give Ukraine the weapons it needs. This war would have been over by now if the West hadn’t shit themselves, because they thought Ukraine was winning this war.

  4. There can be no negotiated settlement, as Putin is faithless. He will not abide the agreement, and will use the time to rebuild forces to try again. There will be no negotiations. Russia will leave when it can no longer militarily and financially continue, and may make all the excuses they like, when they are defeated militarily. Russia will be defeated militarily, if the west continues to support them.
