Republicans call on Johnson to resign or face firing over aid to Ukraine

Republican Party representative Marjorie Taylor Greene declared on Sunday that House Speaker Mike Johnson had “betrayed” Republican voters after lawmakers approved new aid to Ukraine. She threatens to initiate a vote for his dismissal if he does not resign, citing CNN.

“Mike Johnson’s speakership is over. He needs to do the right thing to resign and allow us to move forward in a controlled process. If he doesn’t do so, he will be vacated,” Greene said on Fox News.

If Greene and her supporters follow through on their threat to force a vote to remove him from the speaker’s position, Johnson will almost certainly have to rely on Democrats for his rescue, the publication writes.

According to the channel, at least three Republicans support Greene’s position.

Johnson insists he did not seek help from any Democrats. However, some of them have expressed readiness to save Johnson, especially after he challenged the right flank of the Republicans on foreign aid.

Congressman Ro Khanna said on Sunday that he would vote against the proposal to remove Johnson from the speaker’s post. “I disagree with Speaker Johnson on many issues and I’ve been very critical of him, but he did the right thing here and he deserves to keep his job till the end of this term,” he said.

Johnson’s part in the vote on aid to Ukraine

On April 20, the US House of Representatives approved $61 billion in aid to Ukraine. Johnson’s decision on whether to put the relevant bill to a vote was crucial. The speaker hesitated for a long time, conducting various consultations, as he had already been threatened with removal from office.

The New York Times, citing sources, reported that Johnson’s decision was influenced by a meeting with senior national security officials who persuaded him of the urgency of providing assistance to Ukraine.

  1. Half of Republicans supported the Ukraine bill + all Dems. Thus the ugly slut represents a minority in the Congress and only half of the GOP. Better strip her of her congressional seat and send her to prison.

    • It only needs a two thirds majority to remove her. I’m sure there are many in the GOP that would be very happy to kick her out of Congress.

  2. I said it before a few moments ago, and I’ll say it again: It’s a black day in American politics when a politician loses his job after doing only the right thing. The maga gangsters are turning our country into a three-ring circus. There’s absolutely nothing about making us great again with pro-fascist, pro-mafia politicians in Congress.

    • Well, it did happen before, Mr. Ofp. I recommend JFK’s “Profiles in Courage” for examples. Even if some politicians portrayed there wouldn’t pass the smell tests of our times, all of them made a stand for their convictions. Which was rare in their times, and even more unusual nowadays. An interesting read! 😎

      • I think it’s nearly impossible to compare any of those cases with what happened in our Congress since October 2023, Mr. Gray. Mafia land is distinctly evil and its intentions to destroy an entire innocent nation is wholly exposed for all to see, so anyone not willing to stand his or her ground against this giant war criminal is extremely shameful and despicable. There is no excuse to make someone pay for doing the ONLY right thing.

  3. It’s not for MTG to make that demand – who the eff does she think she is? If Trump doesn’t call for Johnson’s head, the Speaker is fine. This stupid drama is only about making headlines for MTG, but I hope a growing number of her constituents have had enough of her grandstanding nonsense. No remotely reasonable person can seriously believe that nutcase will actually help to solve the problems of the US! 🙄

  4. The Democrats and most of the Republicans will support Johnson. finding a new speaker will be a shit show just like last time.
Reelection is coming up and Republicans have to show some functionality if they themselves want to keep their jobs.
As for the Dems they know they can at least work with guy now and won’t risk breaking in a new extremist speaker with only 7 months before the elections.

  5. I wouldn’t shed a tear if Johnson were to be replaced by someone who’s not one of the crazies. And I’d love it if it wound up that the replacement was Hakeem Jeffries.

On the other hand, I can see Democrats wanting to save Johnson in order to show that the Speaker wouldn’t be penalized for doing the right thing. (Even if it took him way too long to get there.)

    • Jeffries would be a bridge too far for moderate Republucans, Larry. After all, he’s a rather progressive guy. But someone from the right wing of the Dems would have a chance. I do think they should try that. Imagine the consequences! Bills passed shortly before the election! 😎
