The man who invented “managed reality” for the Kremlin has, reportedly, had to manage his own reality to remain out of prison. Disappeared. A fugitive. That’s the rumour. The subject of a criminal case being — and I quote the phrasing from Russian sources — “being prepared.” The ghost-writer of Putin’s postmodern autocracy has been ghosted by the system he built.

Vladislav Surkov. Putin’s brain. That was never Dugin – but Surkov is a far more likely candidate for that title. The grey cardinal. The architect of sovereign democracy. The curator of the invasion of Ukraine. The man who ran the Donbas occupation like a stage production. And, according to multiple Russian and Ukrainian sources in the last few hours, a man who has just bolted from Russia — one step ahead, they say, of the FSB knock on the door.
