A rally in support of the former president of Georgia and ex-governor of the Odessa region Mikhail Saakashvili was held on Wednesday afternoon under the walls of the Georgian consulate in Odessa.

The action brought together about 50 citizens who are not indifferent to the fate of the disgraced politician, who has been kept in a Georgian prison for more than a year.

The participants unfurled banners “Freedom to Mikhail” and chanted “Misha is from Odessa”.

“I monitor what is happening with Saakashvili,” volunteer Tomaz Tomasini told those present. – In fact, a person has been in prison for a year, now he was transferred to a hospital after foreign experts found arsenic and several heavy metals in his body, which gradually make it impossible for him to move. His brain is destroyed, and he is practically unable to walk on his own. I’m afraid that this process is irreversible and every hour brings Saakashvili’s death closer. And the Georgian authorities don’t give a damn about that.”

According to the organizers, the Odessa action is part of an international initiative – rallies in support of Saakashvili were held simultaneously in 40 more cities around the world.

Recall that the ex-president of Georgia, citizen of Ukraine Mikheil Saakashvili returned to his homeland on September 30, 2021, shortly before the parliamentary elections. Upon arrival, he was arrested and placed in prison, where he  went on a hunger strike.

In Georgia, he was awaited by two verdicts in absentia by the Tbilisi City Court. On January 5, 2018, he was found guilty and sentenced to three years in prison for abuse of office, and on June 28, 2018, to six years in prison for organizing the beating of a member of the Georgian parliament, Valery Gelashvili, in 2005.

Since November 2022, reports began to appear in the media that the condition of Mikheil Saakashvili in prison was deteriorating sharply.
