Russian President Vladimir Putin supported the idea of creating Cossack units within the National Guard. This was stated by the presidential envoy to the North Caucasian Federal District Yuri Chaika.
The idea of creating separate Cossack units within the Russian Guard was put forward by Chaika himself. According to him, he wrote a “corresponding paper” about this to Putin and this initiative was supported.
These will, we think, Cossack regiments, battalions will be created, namely exclusively Cossack ones. They will be located at the place of deployment, at the place of residence of the Cossacks. This is our thought, idea. It is difficult to say how we will implement it, but we will try to implement it in such a plane.
Chaika came up with the idea of attracting Cossacks to the ranks of the National Guard at a meeting of the Presidential Council for Cossack Affairs on June 24. Then he proposed, first, as an experiment, to involve the Cossacks of the Terek military Cossack society, and then, if successful, to spread the practice throughout the country.
