putin Just LOST What Made Him Untouchable (video commentary)

08/02/2026

A bomb exploded outside a guarded elite event in central Moscow as Sberbank warned that Russian lenders lacked the spare liquidity to absorb more Kremlin debt. Together, these shocks reveal two fronts opening inside Vladimir Putin’s own regime: one threatening elite security, the other threatening elite wealth.

For decades, loyalty to Putin bought protection, privilege, and distance from Russia’s wars. That bargain is now collapsing. Senior commanders and Kremlin insiders can no longer assume Moscow remains beyond the war’s reach, while a roughly $72 billion first-half deficit, weak bond sales, rising bad loans, forced lending, punitive taxes, and $25 billion moving into physical cash squeeze Russian banks and businesses simultaneously.

This does not prove an imminent coup. It reveals something more dangerous for Putin: the system that made him untouchable is becoming a liability for the people who sustain it. Supporting him now exposes Russia’s elite to greater financial losses, business risk, and personal danger. What once protected them now forces them to absorb his failures. Putin is no longer simply failing to protect his power base. He is becoming its greatest threat, opening two fronts inside his own regime and destroying the bargain that once made him indispensable.
