Russia’s war with Ukraine is the biggest tactical and strategic mistake in modern history, Finnish President Alexander Stubb said in an interview with The Sydney Herald .

“I would argue that this is the biggest tactical and strategic mistake in modern history, because he (Russian ruler Vladimir Putin, – ed.) sought to appease Ukraine; it would become a member of the European Union and eventually NATO. His goal was to dismantle NATO. Well, he just doubled the border with NATO through Finland. His goal was to destroy the transatlantic partnership. Together we are now increasing our defense spending to 5% [of GDP over 10 years]. His goal was to break up the EU. Well, I have never seen him more united. So Putin has failed by all accounts,” Stubb stressed.

He also emphasized that Putin is paying too high a price in the war in Ukraine, as his troops are advancing very slowly.

“Look, this year it advanced 0.25 percent of Ukrainian land, which resulted in 167 dead soldiers per kilometer. That’s a pretty high price,” the Finnish president noted.
