Putin, Dmytro, and the Jews
“I have served in the Ukrainian military for twelve years. I am from Donbas. I am a Jew. You think I can be a Nazi?…”
Since the full scale invasion, Vladimir Putin has proven the enemy of Jewish people. He drove Moscow Jews to flee Russia and destroyed Jewish synagogues and communities in Ukraine. In a stunning act of anti-semitism, he labeled the Jewish president of Ukraine a Nazi, a leader whose very family members were murdered by actual Nazis. Putin supported the October 7 terrorist atrocities of Hamas against Jews in Israel by denouncing Israel and welcoming Hamas leaders to Moscow for high level meetings. He aligned himself with Iran, a key architect of international anti-semitic terror. Whatever illusion Netanyahu was coddling of Russian/Israeli ties should now be recognized as folly.
There is much to say about the rank hypocrisy of Putin’s justification of the murder of Ukrainian civilians under the banner of “denazification.” We might be reminded of the neo-Nazi movements within Russia and Putin’s strategic use of them over a decade ago to fight opposition candidates.
Save those for another day. Today, here’s a lesson from my friend Dmytro.
On February 24, 2022, Dmytro returned with his wife and child to his apartment home in Irpin after defending Ukraine in the East. Within 90 minutes of his return, Russian ordinance was destroying the apartment complex, choppers were in the air, and chaos was breaking loose. He put a rifle in his wife’s hands, grabbed his infant daughter, and hustled down the stairs in search of safety.
Dmytro joined the team from Ukraine Story for a behind the scenes look at Russian tactics and the destruction of Bucha and Irpin. During our interview, I asked Dmytro about Putin’s allegations of Nazism as a justification for the annihilation of Ukrainian cities. Here is what he told me:

Putin is not the best military commander, but this KGB operative turned lifetime dictator is the world’s leading captain of disinformation. His words are his weapons. The oldest trick in his Soviet playbook is projection – accuse the other guy of crimes you are committing. The second oldest trick is to redefine words. Putin’s working definition of Nazi is “any Ukrainian who is anti-Russian.” By redefining a word out of existence, he can rally his nation in a new WWII cause. He empowers troops to commit atrocities against the ultimate evil – Nazis. Hence, Russian soldiers feel justified killing and torturing Ukrainians civilian en masse.

The Nazi narrative was developed by the Russians and picked up by the mainstream press. Anyone in Ukraine who was/is anti-Russian is a Nazi according to Putin.

Russian society must consist of 99,9 % of the total dummies if any crazed and ignorant antisemitic crook can work his way upwards and stay there for three decades, leading them all by their noses and killing them, as well as many thousands of good people who have done no harm to him.

The full scale Russian invasion is first and foremost a war on civilians and civilian infrastructure. One of the first things you notice is that the homes at street crossings have been annihilated. Any people inside have likely been killed.
It’s important to realize that many of the buildings in this vicinity have already been rebuilt. But not this one. It’s entirely possible that there was no time to flee, and no family left to return and rebuild.
