The Kremlin intends to monitor the stay of its citizens abroad and block their accounts in Russian banks. Russian media write about this with reference to sources.
It is alleged that the Russian Ministry of Finance has prepared a draft resolution by which banks and other financial organizations will be required to monitor the stay of their individual clients abroad and require information from them about their tax residence.
It is expected that banks will identify the long-term presence of their clients abroad through the geolocation function in the bank’s mobile application or personal account on the website. If it turns out that the client has been outside the Russian Federation for more than six months, questions will arise for him.
It is noted that Russian banks are already obliged to stop servicing clients who refuse to provide information about their tax residence or provide false information. Now banks will also check which clients could become a tax resident of another country.
Back in the summer, Russian authorities raised taxes for their citizens who work remotely from abroad. Probably, the new requirements for banks are an attempt to strengthen control over such taxpayers.
