Trump and Putin discussed this issue during their last phone conversation.

Russia has agreed to help the administration of US President Donald Trump in talks with Iran on issues such as the Islamic Republic’s nuclear program and its support for regional anti-American sympathizers, Bloomberg reports .

Anonymous sources told reporters that Trump asked Russian dictator Vladimir Putin to include Moscow in the U.S.-Iran talks during a phone call in February. The issue was also discussed between senior U.S. officials and their Russian counterparts at talks in Saudi Arabia.

“Russia believes that the US and Iran should resolve all problems through negotiations… Moscow is ready to do everything in its power to achieve this,” said Russian presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov in response to a request from journalists.

The press secretary of the Iranian Foreign Ministry, Ismail Bagai, also spoke about Russia’s participation in the negotiation process between Washington and Tehran. According to him, it is “natural” for countries to offer their assistance.

“Given the importance of these issues, it is quite possible that many parties will show goodwill and willingness to help resolve various problems,” he said at a teleconference in Tehran on March 3.

Sources told reporters that top officials from Washington and Moscow, including US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, discussed US interest in helping Russia resolve Iranian issues during a meeting in Riyadh on February 18.

The agency recalled that after returning to the White House, Trump promised to return the US to the policy of “maximum pressure” on Iran, which he pursued during his first presidential term. However, he also said that he wanted to immediately begin work on a “verified nuclear peace agreement” with Iran.

The agency stressed that it was unclear how receptive Iran would be to any U.S. entreaties channeled through Russia. Many hardliners who dominate influential Iranian institutions publicly oppose cooperation with Washington.

“Despite their public position, the US and Iran are trying to find channels of communication, productive channels that would mark the beginning of a dialogue,” Nikolai Kozhanov, associate professor at the Center for Gulf Studies at Qatar University, shared with journalists.

According to him, any mutual understanding between the US and Iran will be “comprehensive.” Kozhanov predicts that the US will offer to ease sanctions, and Iran will agree to curb its regional ambitions.

What is interesting is that on March 2, US National Security Advisor Michael Waltz published a post on his page on the social network X in which he accused the administration of former US President Joe Biden of enlisting the support of the Russians as “mediators in negotiations with the murderous Iranian regime.”

“Iran is responsible for the deaths of hundreds of American soldiers and violence throughout the Middle East. Hypocrisy and bias of the Democrats,” he said.
