The US Army is reducing personnel by 5% (24,000 people) and is restructuring to have more capabilities for the next big war .
As the Associated Press writes , the US Army is facing a shortage of recruits, which means there are not enough soldiers to fill all vacancies. The mentioned reduction will affect “vacant” positions, in particular, those related to the fight against insurgents. There were many of them during the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, but now they are not so necessary. In addition, about 3,000 people will be cut in the army’s special operations forces.
Under the plan, about 7,500 troops would be added to other critical missions, including air defense and anti-drone units. There will also be five new task forces around the world with enhanced cyber, intelligence and long-range capabilities.
US Army Secretary Christine Wormuth said she and Gen. Randy George, the chief of the Army, were working to cut “empty” and redundant positions. Instead, during the next five years, they should attract a sufficient number of military personnel to reach the level of 470,000.
“We are leaving the fight against terrorism and insurgent movements. We want to be ready for large-scale combat operations,” Wormuth explained.
According to an Army document, the service is “significantly overstretched” and does not have enough soldiers to fill existing units.
