The Polish Foreign Ministry announced the damage to the military memorial to the victims of Katyn in the village of Medny (Tver region of the Russian Federation).

According to the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, a bas-relief of the Order of Virtuti Militari and the cross of the September Campaign of 1939 were cut from the monument in the cemetery.
“It should be emphasized that this was not done by vandals. This is a decision of the Putin Prosecutor’s Office of the Tver Region. In its opinion, these symbols do not comply with the federal law “On Commemoration of the Victory of the Soviet People in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945″. As this prosecutor’s office claims, the war began in 1941,” the Polish ministry emphasized.
The Polish Foreign Ministry recalled that the victims of the Katyn massacre of 1940 are buried in the cemetery in Miedno: 6.3 thousand Polish officers, state police officers and officials from the Ostashkov camp, who were shot in the back of the head by the NKVD. As it is noted, for years the authorities of the Soviet Union tried to hide this crime and distort the truth.
“We perceive this outrageous provocation not only as an attempt to interfere in the presidential elections in Poland, but also as a typical Russian attempt to change history, which aims to distort the historical fact that on September 17, 1939, Stalin’s Russia, together with Hitler, attacked Poland,” the Polish Foreign Ministry said.
