I would like to end 2022 by paying tribute to the heroism of the Ukrainian people. The horrors of the past year are quite simply beyond imagination and would have broken most nations. Not Ukraine. Putin believed the war would be over in a matter days. Many senior figures in Western capitals agreed. Ukrainians have defied these expectations and inspired the watching world with their courage, resilience, and military prowess. These qualities quickly won over the international community and persuaded a coalition of nations to arm and support Ukraine. As we enter 2023, Ukraine’s survival is no longer in any serious doubt. Instead, there is cautious optimism about a coming Ukrainian victory and serious speculation over whether Putin himself can survive. This is an historic achievement of unprecedented proportions that has raised Ukraine to greatness and will shape the geopolitical climate for decades to come. Happy New Year and Slava Ukraini!

2022: THE YEAR RUSSIA LOST ITS MILITARY SUPERPOWER STATUS

The invasion of Ukraine has shattered Russia’s reputation as the world’s No. 2 army. Here are five of the most humiliating setbacks suffered by Putin’s discredited military:

  1. Russian tanks towed away by Ukrainian tractors: in the early weeks of the war, nothing illustrated the disarray among Putin’s troops than the sight of Ukrainian farmers casually stealing damaged or abandoned Russian tanks
  2. Retreats portrayed as “goodwill gestures”: when Russia lost the Battle of Kyiv, embarrassed Kremlin officials absurdly attempted to disguise the defeat as a voluntary withdrawal. The subsequent retreat from Snake Island was similarly described as a “goodwill gesture”
  3. Russian flagship sunk by a nation with no navy: April saw the Russian Black Sea Fleet flagship, the Moskva, sunk by Ukraine with a Neptune missile fired from Odesa region. Russia attempted to save Putin’s blushes by saying it was an “accident”
  4. Kherson joins Russia “forever”: in late September, Putin solemnly declared that Kherson had joined the Russian Federation “forever.” By early November, Ukraine had liberated Kherson amid the latest Russian retreat
  5. Russia relies on convict slave army: as morale has plummeted within the Russian army, a desperate Putin has been forced to recruit thousands of convicted criminals from Russian prisons to serve as cannon fodder in Ukraine
