Peace talks are going exactly the way Putin wants – CNN

The talks in Istanbul could lead to a bilateral meeting between Trump and Putin.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s decision to send Defense Minister Rustam Umerov to meet with a low-ranking Russian delegation in Istanbul was a difficult choice driven by necessity. The only person the meeting is designed for is US President Donald Trump, according to British journalist and CNN Kyiv correspondent Nick Paton Walsh.

He said Ukraine wants to show it is willing to take any necessary steps to peacefully resolve the war, or Trump may start to treat Russian dictator Vladimir Putin even more favorably.

Nick Paton Walsh is confident that in the end the peace process is going exactly as Russia wants it to – slowly and with the Kremlin as its planner. While Ukraine, along with its European allies, is demanding a 30-day unconditional ceasefire, Putin and Trump have shown their true attitude towards the negotiations.

The journalist pointed out that the Kremlin is not afraid of new sanctions and European pressure. Even threats from Trump have no effect on Putin.

Nick Paton Walsh stressed that the US president’s statement that “nothing will happen” until he meets the Russian dictator casts aside all hopes for diplomacy until the pair hold a bilateral summit, leaving Putin free to pursue any course he chooses.

The journalist does not rule out that a bilateral meeting between Trump and Putin could take place even in the near future. He added that even the talks in Istanbul on Friday could lead to such a summit.

Putin may also have known that Trump would not be angry with him for refusing to participate in the talks with Zelensky in Turkey, says Nick Paton Walsh. At this time, Zelensky needs to be close to the negotiations in case they suddenly escalate, but at the same time not be noticed waiting for the Russian dictator’s next move.

According to the journalist, Putin can take advantage of Trump’s neutral reaction to what is happening to accumulate strength and try to advance in Ukraine. In this case, he will have a stronger position in the negotiations.

  1. “Even threats from Trump have no effect on Putin.”

What threats? Let’s be honest. Trump will do as he is told by putler. Zelensky might as well go home with the negotiators and tell Trump to give him a call when putler has told him what he wants from Ukraine.

    • Yeah, that’s a moronic statement. I’ve never heard or read about any threats from the orange gangster. Unless it was against Zelensky.

      • The US have never been more humiliated by a third world shithole for as long as I can remember.

        • No, this has never happened before. Trump has shit on our country, our laws, and Constitution in every way possible.
