Regarding the Jan. 28 news article, “As West shores up Ukraine, Russia signals little optimism on resolving crisis”:
With his demand for a pledge that Ukraine will never join NATO, Russian President Vladimir Putin revealed the reason he wants to invade Ukraine: He knows that once Ukraine is in the NATO alliance, he no longer can attack it because he could never win a war with NATO. A sequence of quick, unconventional actions by NATO could save Ukraine and save lives. First, NATO should declare an emergency due to the presence of so many combat-ready Russian troops near several NATO countries. Next, it should waive for Ukraine the cumbersome and time-consuming preconditions for membership. It should then offer Ukraine instant membership.Opinions to start the day, in your inbox. Sign up.
The day Ukraine accepts, the country should invoke Article 5. NATO troops should enter Ukraine the same day to help defend it. That would probably solve the crisis without a single shot being fired. Getting Ukraine into NATO quickly would also enhance the security of countries such as Poland, Hungary and Romania that would not like to see themselves sitting next to Russian-occupied territory. A slightly altered version of this scenario would probably work even a few days into a Russian invasion.

Well said Harry.
This is from readers’ letters. He is of course exactly right. But of course he is not aware that Nato consists of more pro-Russia than anti-Russia countries and therefore is useless.
But the solution is simple. The US, UK, Canada and Poland can go in unilaterally and achieve the same effect. In fact troops with air support from the US alone plus any one of the above would achieve the same effect.
Harry must be reading our blog, lol…
Whatever the author is taking I want some. Yeah sure great dream but it’ll never happen. I think it’s all an issue of the “no balls” or “what’s in it for me” syndrome of certain countries in the EU and NATO. IMHO!!!

A most sensible plan. However (there’s often a “however” with NATO, EU, Biden, the West…) that will never happen because NATO is crippled by spineless cowards and Ruskie agents in its ranks. Saving lives – lots of lives – is not an option with those cretins.
