Novaya Gazeta is ceasing operations, according to a statement on the publication’s website.

We have been murdered. On November 9th, we will turn off the lights in our home, where we have lived for 30 years, shut down the servers, and leave. The newspaper no longer exists. The Russian authorities and Russian intelligence services have forced the editorial staff to cease operations. More than thirty years of life, together with the country and its citizens, will end for us on the streets, without means of subsistence, under the constant threat of repression.
On October 29, it became known that the editorial office was being evicted from its office on Potapovsky Lane in central Moscow.
“At the same time as the eviction letter, they disabled the donation system that allowed us to receive donations from our readers. In other words, they deprived us of funds. Completely. This is a coordinated operation. The banks’ excuse that they’re doing this based on internal corporate rules won’t convince anyone. These are external rules, established by the repressive state apparatus, by FSB officers who have infiltrated every organization. They consider the country their property,” Novaya Gazeta stated.
The editors noted that they managed to “work in the dense encirclement of the security services” for nearly five years of war. During this time, the publication’s websites were blocked, the newspaper’s media registration was revoked, its editor-in-chief, Nobel Peace Prize laureate Dmitry Muratov, was attacked and declared a “foreign agent,” its journalists were also labeled “foreign agents,” Novaya Gazeta correspondent Elena Milashina was beaten in Chechnya, a criminal case was opened against journalist Oleg Roldugin, and searches were conducted at the editorial office and the apartment of editor-in-chief Sergei Sokolov.
And now—that’s it. We’ve found ourselves in the “kill zone.” This isn’t just our personal story. It’s the story of a country and a society that are being finished off in exactly the same way. <…> Doesn’t Article 29 of the Constitution—”censorship is prohibited”—sound like a mockery today? The courts have been destroyed, along with the law and the rule of law. Having convictions is now treason. But treason is when a state betrays its own Constitution. And this treason is an ongoing crime, happening right now before the eyes of the entire world. The murder of Novaya Gazeta is further proof of this. We’ve been writing about precisely this all these years. While we could. That’s why they killed us. Thank you to everyone who heard us.
Novaya Gazeta ceased publication in print in 2022, following the Russian invasion of Ukraine. At the same time, Russia’s Basmanny Court revoked its media license. In September 2026, Novaya Gazeta was declared a “foreign agent.”
