Pentagon officials have advised several NATO countries to tone down their rhetoric about Russia and the threat it poses to Europe.

US officials believe that statements by some European leaders and officials are undermining security on the continent, Reuters reports , citing informed sources. It is noted that Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia have received warnings urging them to weigh public statements about Russia.

The publication noted that such recommendations appeared just as the White House intensified the negotiation process to end the war in Ukraine.

But the Pentagon itself refused to comment on the situation. In particular, in response to a request for comment, a Pentagon official noted: “Private conversations between allies are just that, so we will not comment on these allegations.”

But, one of the publication’s sources detailed that the attention of American officials was drawn to comments by European leaders that Russia was “backed into a corner” and was resorting to increasingly desperate measures as its battlefield gains slowed.

Sources noted that the warning to European countries was made by the Pentagon’s deputy chief of staff for political affairs, Elbridge Colby.

Colby recently told a Baltic official not to “annoy” the Russians, according to one source familiar with the matter. Colby also told Europeans that statements like Russia being “cornered like a rat” were unnecessary rhetoric.
