In August, the new water supply system was tested.

The new water main in Mykolaiv has passed testing and will soon provide the city with fresh water, the press service of the Cabinet of Ministers reported .

Construction work began in January 2025, and the water pipeline was tested in August. Water is already being supplied to the water utility’s tanks, and within two weeks, fresh water will completely replace the salt water in the city’s systems.

It is noted that UAH 8.7 billion was allocated from the state budget in 2024 for the construction of a new water intake system from the Southern Bug River.

The water pipeline will provide 120,000 cubic meters of water per day for households and 50,000 cubic meters for irrigation of agricultural lands. Pipes and pumps are located underground, shelters for workers are being completed, remote control panels, backup power and a system for protecting against attacks are installed. Construction is currently in its final stages.

Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko noted that the government plans to ensure uninterrupted water supply in all Ukrainian communities, for which a list of facilities for new construction, reconstruction, overhaul of systems and re-equipment of water supply structures and networks in Vinnytsia, Dnipropetrovsk, Odessa and Poltava regions was approved.

Problems with water supply in Mykolaiv

In 2022, Russian occupation forces deliberately blew up the water supply in Mykolaiv , leaving local residents without clean drinking water. According to British journalists, the water supply was damaged between Mykolaiv and Kherson in the most vulnerable place – where it emerges from the surface. On May 6, 2022, the city began filling the water supply system with industrial water from the estuary.

In November 2022, it was revealed that 240 kilometers of water pipes in Mykolaiv were damaged by corrosion due to salt water .
