The Donbas issue will be a key topic of the trilateral talks between Ukraine, the US, and Russia in the UAE . The Kremlin is demanding the handover of the rest of the region as a key condition for ending the war, Reuters reports .
“Russian President Vladimir Putin’s demand that Ukraine hand over the 20% of the Donetsk region it still holds—approximately 5,000 square kilometers—has proven to be the main obstacle to a breakthrough agreement,” the publication states.
A source close to the Kremlin told Reuters that Moscow is considering the “Anchorage formula,” allegedly agreed upon between Trump and Putin at their meeting in August. This formula, according to the source, entails Russian control over all of Donbas and a freeze on the current frontline in all other areas.
In another publication , Reuters notes that Zelensky, in his own words, sees no reason to give Putin the rest of Donbas, as this would make it easier for the Russians to further advance deeper into Ukraine.
“The part of Donbas still held by Kyiv includes Sloviansk and Kramatorsk, ‘fortress cities’ that form part of a heavily fortified defensive line, complete with trenches, anti-tank barriers, bunkers, and minefields. Kyiv considers these cities vital to the defense of the rest of Ukraine, as the land west of Donetsk is much flatter, making it easier for Russia to advance and seize territory on the eastern bank of the Dnieper,” the publication states.
At the same time, the publication notes that, according to estimates by Western military analysts, Russia will need a year or more to capture the rest of Donbas at the current rate of advance.
According to Reuters, Donbas, once a vital economic center, has now been completely destroyed and is more of a political hub. However, the territory’s subsoil remains rich in mineral deposits, including rare titanium and zirconium.
“The fate of Donbas will shape the historical legacy of Putin and Zelensky. Putin positions himself as a defender of ethnic Russians everywhere. Ensuring the security of the entire Donbas is central to his narrative. Since 2022, Zelensky has earned a reputation as an unwavering defender of his country against a much larger and more powerful neighbor,” the publication writes.

I’ve heard a lot about this Anchorage formula. But most of it from Lavrov and Pisscough, nothing from Trump or US officials. So that is what everyone is basing their knowledge on. That is because Witkoff fucked it up and told the US that Zelensky agreed to what you referred to when he didn’t. The whole meeting in Alaska was based on a lie from Witkoff. Context is sometimes hard to get, but better than believing someone’s lies or some biased media source.
