The European Commission has decided to send 447 emergency generators worth €3.7 million from the EU’s strategic reserves to Ukraine. This assistance comes in response to Russia’s ongoing airstrikes on energy infrastructure .

According to the EU Delegation to Ukraine , more than one million Ukrainians were left without electricity, water and heating due to freezing conditions.

“Russia’s continued attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure are deliberately depriving civilians of heat, light, and basic services in the midst of a harsh winter. This is aimed at breaking the Ukrainian spirit. But they will not succeed. Europe is responding with actions, not words. A new shipment of generators is already on the way, adding to the more than 9,500 generators provided by the EU that are already providing power to various regions of Ukraine,” noted EU Commissioner for Preparedness, Crisis Management and Equality Aja Labib.

Therefore, the new aid is aimed at restoring power to hospitals, shelters, and critical services. Generators will be distributed by the Ministry of Communities and Territories Development of Ukraine, in cooperation with the Ukrainian Red Cross, to the most affected communities.

At the same time, the European Commission strongly condemns Russia’s attacks on critical energy infrastructure and the humanitarian damage they cause.

The EU emphasizes that it will not allow Russia to freeze Ukraine and will continue to help Ukrainians survive this winter.

As is known, the European Commission has allocated over €1.2 billion in humanitarian aid to protect civilians and delivered over 160,000 tons of aid through the Civil Protection Mechanism since the beginning of Russia’s invasion. This includes solid fuel, heating equipment, generators, and emergency heating points.

In addition to humanitarian aid, Ukraine has received at least €3 billion in energy security assistance. Ahead of this winter, the European Commission mobilized €927 million for emergency gas purchases for Ukraine, and the EU’s electricity export capacity is at its maximum level.

  1. If Ukraine got the weapons it needs, such urgent deliveries would most likely not be required.
