NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that as of now, a record number of Alliance member states are meeting the defense spending target of 2% of GDP.
Stoltenberg said this during a speech at the Wilson Center think tank in Washington, European Pravda reports .
Speaking about NATO’s defense capability, Stoltenberg stated that “European states are increasing defense spending to record levels . “
He recalled that in 2014, only three members of the Alliance – the USA, Greece and the United Kingdom – fulfilled the then-set target of 2% of GDP.
“Today I can announce that this year more than 20 member states will spend at least 2% of their GDP on defense. This is good for Europe and good for America,” Stoltenberg said, without specifying which states he was talking about.
In February of this year, Stoltenberg reported that during the 10 years of the Russian war against Ukraine, six times more NATO member states had spent more than 2% of their GDP on defense .
“In 2024, NATO members in Europe will invest (spend on defense, – ed.) $380 billion. This will exceed 2% of their joint GDP for the first time,” Stoltenberg said at the time.
“I expect 18 allies to spend 2% of GDP this year. And this is also a record. This is a six-fold increase from 2014, when only three allies met this requirement,” he added.

I do think it was right to reduce defence spending in the 90s. It was reasonable to react on the reduced security risk that way. However, Nato members should have changed course decisively in 2014, instead of waiting until 2022. That was bad judgment. ☹

Russia wasn’t less aggressive in the 1990’s than they were before.
It was stupid that the West thought it had won the Cold War and ruzzia became democratic.
