The Hungarian government has decided that Ukrainians will be able to obtain a residence permit even with an expired passport while the state of emergency continues in Hungary and for six months after its end.

This is stated in the corresponding decree of June 14 on regulating the validity of foreign passports of Ukrainian citizens, reports European Truth.

Thus, the document specifies that an identity card abroad is considered valid during the state of emergency introduced in Hungary .

In this way, when issuing a residence permit, the foreign passport of a citizen of Ukraine, which has lost its validity, is considered valid and a residence permit can be issued – including within six months after the end of the state of emergency in Hungary.

At the same time, this norm is not valid during the procedure for obtaining Hungarian citizenship.

For the first time, a state of emergency was declared in Hungary on March 11, 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic, it operated with minor changes until June 2022. After all, in May 2022, the Hungarian government declared a state of emergency due to the war in Ukraine, and since then it has been regularly extended.
