He was voted for on the second attempt, receiving 218 votes.

U.S. House Speaker  Mike Johnson has saved his re-election bid in dramatic fashion, defeating a pair of conservatives who initially voted to deny him the support he needed to win on the first ballot.

Johnson, who had a one-vote margin of error, won 218-215 over Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, The Hill reports  .

Representative Thomas Massie (R-KY) said before the vote that he would not support the Speaker and instead voted for Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-MIN). Representative Keith Self (R-TX) voted for Representative Byron Donalds (R-FL), and Representative Ralph Norman (R-SC) voted for Representative Jim Jordan (R-OH) but later flipped his votes to Johnson.

About a dozen Conservatives remained undecided ahead of the vote.

It notes that the speaker’s election must be completed before the House can take any other action, including swearing in its members, passing a rules package and ultimately certifying President-elect Trump’s victory on Monday.

On the other side of the Capitol, senators expect far less drama, but will also see new members sworn in on the first day of the new Congress.

Vote for Johnson

Earlier, newly elected US President Donald Trump said that he “fully” supports the candidacy of Mike Johnson for the post of Speaker of the House of Representatives.

He called for support for Johnson and called him a “hard-working and religious man” who can make the right decisions.
