Dozens of top managers associated with the aggressor country’s largest companies have died in Russia since 2022. In many cases, investigators saw signs of suicide, and the mystery of these tragedies led to the term “sudden Russian death syndrome.”
According to the Russian propaganda outlet Gazeta.ru, a series of mysterious deaths in Russia began in 2022, when dictator Vladimir Putin declared “SVO.” “One by one, rich and successful executives began to die – mostly from large oil and gas companies such as Gazprom and Lukoil,” the article says.
The newspaper notes that at least 27 top managers of large companies have died in recent years.
Moreover, most of the tragedies occurred in 2022, when no less than 18 cases were recorded.
Top managers who died in 2022
– Leonid Shulman, 60 years old, head of the transport service of Gazprom Invest. He was found with signs of suicide in the bathtub of a country house in the Leningrad region, with a suicide note on him.
– Dmytro Teslenko, 60 years old, top manager of TAIF. He felt unwell in Argentina while climbing Aconcagua,
– Vasyl Melnikov, 44, director of the medical company “Medstom”. He was found dead in March, and the bodies of his wife and two children with stab wounds were also found in the house.
– Alexander Tyulyakov, 61, a top manager in the financial division of Gazprom. Found dead in the garage of his house near St. Petersburg.
– Vladislav Avayev, 51, former vice president of Gazprombank. Found shot dead in a locked apartment in Moscow, with the bodies of his wife and daughter found nearby.
– Serhiy Protosenya, 55, former top manager of Novatek PJSC. His body was discovered in a villa in Spain, next to the bodies of his wife and daughter.
– Alexander Subbotin, 43, former member of the board of Lukoil. Died in the basement of a shaman’s house in the Moscow region, where he had supposedly come to cure a hangover.
– Andriy Krukovsky, 37, director of Gazprom’s ski resort in Krasnaya Polyana. Died after falling from a cliff in the Caucasus.
– Yuriy Voronov, 61, director of Gazprom contractor Astra Shipping. Found with a gunshot wound in the swimming pool of his home near St. Petersburg.
– Volodymyr Gabrielyan, 39, First Deputy CEO of VK, died in June in the Nenets Autonomous Okrug while crossing a river in an all-terrain vehicle.
– Sergey Merzlyakov, 45, VK purchasing director, died in June in the Nenets Autonomous Okrug while crossing a river in an all-terrain vehicle.
– Ravil Maganov, 67 years old, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Lukoil. Fell from the window of the Central Clinical Hospital building in Moscow.
– Pavel Pchelnikov, 52, communications director of Digital Logistics (Russian Railways). Found with signs of suicide on the balcony of his apartment in Moscow.
– Pavlo Antov, 65 years old, MP and founder of “Volodymyr Standard”. Fell out of a hotel window in India.
– Ivan Pechorin, 39 years old, director of the State Corporation for the Development of the Far East and the Arctic. Fell off a boat while walking in the Sea of Japan near Russky Island.
Top managers who died in 2023
– Kristina Baykova, 28, vice president of Loko-Bank. Fell out of the window of her 11th floor apartment in Moscow after a party.
– Vyacheslav Rovneiko, 59 years old, director of the Interregional Fuel Union, founder of Urals Energy, co-owner of Nafta (B) NV. Found dead in his home on Rublevka in Moscow.
– Igor Shkurko, 51, first deputy head of Yakutskenergo, former deputy from United Russia. Found dead in the Yakutsk pre-trial detention center.
– Vladimir Nekrasov, 66, Chairman of the Board of Directors of PJSC “Lukoil”, who was elected Chairman of the Board of Directors of “Lukoil” after the death of Ravil Maganov. He died of acute heart failure after a five-day binge.
Top managers who died in 2024
– Vitaly Robertus, 53, vice president of Lukoil. He was found dead in his office at Lukoil’s office on Sretensky Boulevard with signs of suicide.
– Mikhail Rogachev, 66 years old, executive director of ONEXIM (2008-2011), head of the Rosfond for Technological Development (2011-2015). Fell from the window of the tenth floor of an apartment building in Moscow.

“Sudden Russian Death Syndrome”
A series of mysterious deaths of top Russian executives in Russia has given rise to the term “Sudden Russian Death Syndrome.” It describes suicides, accidents or deaths under unexplained circumstances, falls from windows, poisonings, or sudden heart attacks.
The American magazine The Atlantic was one of the first to mention him in an article about a series of suspicious deaths in the Russian Federation in the year the full-scale war against Ukraine began.
The publication links these cases, in particular, to the war in Ukraine and sanctions against the Russian Federation. The journalists noted that there were about two dozen such deaths at that time, which makes them statistically significant.
They acknowledged that some of the deaths could have been accidental or related to the level of suicide and alcoholism, but pointed out that the mass nature of the tragedies casts doubt on their “naturalness.”
