The temporary protection program itself is officially planned to be extended until March 2028.

The European Union is discussing the possibility of depriving Ukrainian men of military age of the right to temporary protection. As emphasized by the European Commissioner for Home Affairs and Migration, Magnus Brunner, this concerns citizens aged 23 to 60.
“This is also what Ukrainians are asking us for,” he added at a conference after the end of the EU Justice and Home Affairs Council meeting, DW writes .
During the discussion, the participants listened attentively to the ministers of the countries that have accepted the largest number of refugees, in particular the Czech Republic, Germany, Poland, Austria and the Baltic countries. As he promised, in the coming weeks the European Commission will prepare an official plan with a clear description of the next steps and the rules of the protection status.
For these changes to enter into force, they must be approved by a qualified majority of EU member states.
Temporary Protection Program for Ukrainian Citizens – What is Known
In parallel, Brussels reached an agreement on the main issue: the temporary protection program for Ukrainian citizens is planned to be extended until March 2028. This information was confirmed by the Deputy Minister for Migration of Cyprus, Nicholas Ioannides, following the meeting of the EU Council on Justice and Home Affairs.
At the same time, he explained that many European capitals insist on adjusting the conditions for granting this status for certain categories.
“The meeting demonstrated absolute unanimity in support of Ukraine,” the official noted. He believes that this will allow a decision to be made for the benefit of Ukrainians, which will at the same time relieve those states that host refugees of excessive pressure.”
UNIAN previously reported that the European Commission plans to continue protecting Ukrainians in the EU, but men may be in for an unpleasant surprise .

This is a necessary measure. I’m not sure why those men were allowed to leave Ukraine in the first place. I know some fled the country by various ways, while others passed through the border in normal fashion.
I think it’s actually sad. Perhaps I’m just an old SOB, seems these vermin want the benefits of being Ukrainian without the responsibilities. Sad, just sad.
Every country has cowards and traitors. They should not be treated better than the brave souls doing the fighting or those helping the country in a myriad of other ways. I would send them back at the crack of a whip if necessary.
Agreed.
I’ve got more than one dog on this fight.
One I lost.
One just was invalided out after 12 years straight.
And another one I know; a young guy who is big and strong but does not have the killer instinct. His commanders like him and want him on the frontline. They think they can knock some aggression into him.
I suggested to his sister that he should volunteer for one of the essential support roles, but apparently he’s got to go to the front.
These guys of fighting age in Europe have just got to return.
Some people just cannot fight or kill. Fine, they can do any one of the many of these essential support jobs that are needed : drivers, planning, logistics, quartermasters, paramedics, mechanics, comms operators, armoury, caterers, IT experts, drone operators etc etc.
Putler ain’t stopping. It could well be that Ukraine must prepare for years or even decades more.
