For the people driving Russia’s war on Ukraine, the personal cost of stopping the war is still far higher than the cost of continuing it.

That is the reality Western governments keep refusing to confront.

This isn’t a war about borders, it’s about whether Ukraine continues to exist as an independent country with its own language, culture and identity. In the territories Russia occupies, Ukrainian books are destroyed, institutions abolished, Russian law and education imposed, and people pressured into Russian passports; that is erasure.

Putin has never hidden this objective; he is prepared to keep paying the price because his internal systems are holding. Russia still produces weapons, gets Western origin components through third countries and sanctions evasion networks, and uses China to keep the system running.

The elite around him are not breaking; if anything they are being bound tighter together. Seized Western assets are being redistributed inside Russia on a scale not seen for decades. With safe Western exits sharply narrowed, internal loyalty is still the safest option they have.

That’s why nothing is forcing them to stop.

Sanctions that leave their core positions intact are incomplete. Military aid that doesn’t threaten the political survival and core assets of the drivers of the war is incomplete. Statements change nothing. After twelve years, Russia is still bombing Ukrainian cities, occupying Ukrainian land, and trying to erase everything Ukrainian.

Western governments have spent years asking what Ukraine needs. It is not enough.

We are still missing the cost that would make continuing this war riskier for the regime rather than ending it. Not just economic inconvenience or reputational damage. It must be a personal and political cost that the circle around Putin cannot absorb and still keep their positions, wealth and safety.

Until that cost is imposed, the system will keep functioning and Ukrainians will keep paying the price.

That is the pressure point still being avoided. It is the one that changes the outcome.

  1. So what do you have to say about this horror Krasnov, Krasnov Jr and all the other pigs in your putler-grovelling regime?
Did you have a good laugh?

  2. Peter J. Worswick has a long history, as far as Ukraine is concerned, of being right about almost everything.

“We are still missing the cost that would make continuing this war riskier for the regime rather than ending it. Not just economic inconvenience or reputational damage. It must be a personal and political cost that the circle around Putin cannot absorb and still keep their positions, wealth and safety.”

That cost has to be an overwhelming one.
1/ The TOTAL disconnect of trade, financial, travel, diplomatic, sporting and cultural relations between civilized countries and the cauldron of devilry.
2/ the quadrupling of military aid to Ukraine.
3/ the immediate payment of $250 billion of putinaZi cash to Ukraine.
4/ a NFZ in Ukraine enforced by volunteer countries.
5/ volunteer countries must provide three divisions of troops between them. To be deployed in Kyiv, Odesa and Mykolaiv oblasts. (Without those last two, Ukraine cannot survive as a nation).
6/ the American people can play its part by impeaching Kremlin asset Krasnov.
