“It seemed to me that Lukashenko did not know about the invasion”: Moroz on his visit to Belarus

A few days before the Russian invasion, Oleksandr Moroz visited the Republic of Belarus.

Oleksandr Moroz communicated with the Belarusian dictator Oleksandr Lukashenko shortly before the war. A Ukrainian politician and public figure told Natalia Moseichuk about this .

“It seemed to me that even he (Lukashenko, UNIAN) did not know that it would happen,” says Moroz.

“Volodymyr Volodymyrovych, he also wanted to stop all this… we can even deploy our soldiers to disperse there (in Donbass, UNIAN) so that there is no confrontation,” – he relays Lukashenko’s words.

Also, according to the Ukrainian politician, Belarus is far ahead of Ukraine and Russia in the economy and social sphere.

“That’s why the system of power, management and Lukashenko’s position are one thing, but the economy is developing there,” says Moroz.

  1. Seem far fetched that Belarus’s economy is far ahead of Ukrainian. Perhaps Moroz can move to Belarus since he seems to believe in Marxism and would likewise like authoritarian rule.

    • I actually think it is true.
Belarus doesn’t have to keep up a huge army and isn’t at war.
For some reason, the economy did not see a huge growth but remained very stable for decades.
And it never went to shock therapy like other post-Soviet states, leaving a quite a lot of Soviet-era companies up and running. Even if they aren’t profitable, they still keep up the economy by employing people and buying goods.

While Ukraine’s economy is much weaker now than it was in 1989, in Belarus it is about the same or slightly better.
