In Cheboksary, Flamingo missile attacked factory that produces navigation systems for Shaheds and Iskander missiles

On the night of Tuesday, May 5, the russian city of Cheboksary was hit by a missile strike, the main target of which was the strategic enterprise of the VNIIR-Progress JSC military-industrial complex. This was reported by monitoring channels and the author of the Telegram channel Dnipro Osint Garbuz.

Local residents report that before a series of powerful explosions, a missile alert was declared in the city and air raid sirens were turned on. Shortly after the rumble, flashes were recorded in the sky, and a thick column of smoke from the fire rose above the plant.

According to available information, the facility was hit by an FP-5 “Flamingo” missile. In addition to hitting the enterprise itself, damage was recorded to civilian infrastructure in the south of the city. In particular, the facade and glazing of one of the shopping centers were damaged by debris. Numerous footage has already appeared on the network, confirming a large-scale fire in the industrial zone.

The enterprise JSC “VNIIR-Progress” plays a critical role in the functioning of the russian military-industrial complex, as it is a key developer and supplier of microelectronics for navigation. The main value of the plant for the russian army lies in the production of specialized GNSS receivers and antennas that are capable of operating in conditions of intensive operation of electronic warfare means.

The most famous product of this enterprise is the small-sized adaptive antenna arrays of the “Comet” series. These modules are actually “immunity” for drones and missiles: they allow the equipment to ignore the interference created by Ukrainian electronic warfare systems and accurately find the target by satellite signal. Without such components, russian kamikaze drones of the Shahed-136 (Geran-2) type become practically helpless under the influence of “jammers”, but it is the products from Cheboksary that make them resistant to suppression.

In addition, the plant provides electronic “stuffing” for a wider range of weapons. VNIIR-Progress technologies are integrated into the control systems of the “Kalibr” cruise missiles and the “Iskander-M” ballistic complexes, where the accuracy of guidance is a decisive factor. The enterprise also supplies navigation units for UMPK modules – kits that convert conventional Soviet aerial bombs into guided gliding munitions.

A separate area of activity of the plant includes the creation of relay protection and automation systems for military vessels and heavy armored vehicles. The enterprise produces complex low-voltage devices and components for power distribution, which are used on ships of the russian Navy. Thus, the defeat of this facility affects not only the production of drones, but also the entire cycle of creating high-precision missile weapons and naval equipment of the aggressor.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, on the night of May 1 in the city of Tuapse, Krasnodar Krai of the russian federation, a fire broke out on the territory of a marine terminal after the announcement of the threat of a drone attack.

On April 20, residents of Tuapse complained about the “oil rain” that fell in the city against the backdrop of a large-scale fire after the UAV attack. On April 24, russian media wrote that Tuapse is threatened with disruption of the tourist season due to pollution of the sea and coast as a result of a drone attack on the refinery.

The governor of the Krasnodar Krai of the aggressor country, russia, Veniamin Kondratyev, called a video by Tuapse residents in which they showed the effects of “oil rain,” or a stream of burning oil that flowed through the streets of the city after one of the recent UAV attacks on an oil refinery, a “psychological attack.”
